Video Interviews: Ian Brown tells the story of his 60th year

Ian Brown describes Sixty as a diary of the year between his sixtieth and sixty-first birthday. “I wrote it to figure out the very conflicting emotions I had about getting older.” Ian Brown sat down with a video crew in Toronto and conducted interviews for Open Book Toronto, Maclean’s magazine and Huffington Post.

IN THIS VIDEO INTERVIEW filmed for Open Book Toronto, Ian Brown muses about the difficulties of getting a true sense of how well the book has done, the risks of writing a diary that is destined to become a book, writing a sequel, or a one-act play based on the book, seeing The Boy in the Moon as a play, and “getting older” as a subject. IN THIS VIDEO INTERVIEW filmed for The Huffington Post Canada Ian Brown discusses different ways of writing about aging — from the philosophical to the self-help — and his own attempt to write to slow down the passage of time. Ian Brown talks about writing the diary as it relates to working as a writer for The Globe and Mail, and the complaints, sorrows, doubts, denials and neurosis the come with age. IN THIS VIDEO INTERVIEW taped for Maclean’s magazine, Ian Brown describes the regimens and challenges of ritually keeping and editing an engaging diary suitable for publishing — in the face of the unpredictability of events. View the Maclean’s interview here
